Pronounced "KOO-ching", this stitch is used to tack down a length of thread on the surface of the finished needlepoint design. It can be used to outline large areas, or worked into shapes.

Couching over a thread is normally done with a fine, thin thread that matches the color of the thread you are laying down. However, contrasting or unusual threads can also be used to give your designs additional decorative or textured effects.

In the sample shown here, from the Love Postcard project, a single strand of 6-strand embroidery floss was used to couch a length of Memory Thread in position.
