The basketweave stitch is from a member of the Tent Stitch family of needlepoint stitches. It is also one of the most common stitches used for needlepoint background areas.

This stitch is worked diagonally, and gets its name by the pattern formed on the reverse side of the canvas as the stitch is worked.

While on the front side of the canvas the stitch looks very similar to a half cross stitch, basketweave stitch (and it's cousin, the continental stitch) gives more coverage to the back side of the work, resulting in a finished piece that can withstand wear and tear.
