Question: How do I blend different colors of threads?
Answer:

Blending two or more colors of needlepoint threads is a terrific way to expand your color palette.

Threads combined for use on standard needlepoint canvases containing 12 holes per inch or less need to be either narrow, or separable - otherwise combining colors makes the thread to large for the holes in the canvas.

Six-strand embroidery floss in cotton, silk, linen, hemp or rayon, and Persian wools are best used for combining because the different plies can be separated from the group and used separately.

In the photo, I have combined two shades of green rayon floss to create a new color. On the far left is the darker color, using all 6 strands of floss. The middle item is the lighter green with all 6 strands used together. The far left shows the new color, combining 3 strands from each color, for a total of 6 strands.

If you wouold like to make one of the colors in the blend more dominant, use more strands in your mix - for example, use 4 strands of the darker color and 2 of the lighter for a total of 6 strands.

Experimenting with blended colors can add a lot of depth to a needlepoint project, and is a lot of fun to try.
