Laying Tools

An Assortment of Laying Tools

Definition:

Laying tools are thin, pointed objects used to help you control the thread as you stitch.

These tools are especially important when stitching using a group of threads, where all threads need to be kept flat and smooth, without any twisting.

Products created specifically as laying tools are available in glass, bone, plastic and metal. However, any slender, pointed tool will work. In this example, items that can be used as a laying tool include (left to right) a “Hera” Marker with tapered end, Ball Point Taylor’s Awl, Straight Taylor’s Awl, Bamboo Stiletto, 4-in-1 Sewing Tool with tapered end cap, Large yarn needle, Double-pointed knitting needle, and even a vintage Hair Ornament.
