The Half Cross Stitch is one of the most basic stitches in needlepoint.
On the front side of the canvas, this stitch looks just like the other tent stitches: the Continental Stitch and Basketweave Stitch. Unlike these, the backside looks like a series of straight stitches. This requires less thread or yarn which in turn does make the stitches lay a little more flat on the front. This stitch should never be done on mono cavas, and is not generally recommended for needlepoint, especially pieces that will get a lot of wear such as upholstery.
The Half Cross Stitch is easily formed. Bring your needle up through the beginning hole leaving an inch on the underside. Push your needle back down into the hole that is up and to the right. Bring needle back up through the hole right above and continue with this pattern until you finish the row when you will turn your work (so that the bottom is at the top)and stitch down the next row.
