The Smyrna Cross can be worked over 2 intersections of canvas (standard) or over multiple intersections(elongated) providedyou are working over an even number of intersections. It is worked in two steps - a standard cross stitch, followed by an upright cross stitch.
To make a Smyrna Cross, insert your needle diagonally from lower left (1) to the upper right(2) over an even number of canvas intersections. Next, bring the needle up at the lower right (3) and cross to the upper left (4) and insert your needle. This completes the first half of the Smyrna Cross.
To work the second half of the Smyrna cross, bring your needleup at the bottom center (5) and insert your needle at the top center (6). Bring your needle up again at the center left (7),and insert at the center right (8) to complete a stitch.
The Smyrna Cross may be worked individually as a decorative element, or in rows.
If you would like to add this stitch to your stitch journal, see step 3.
