To make a single Rice Stitch, make one large cross stitch over four intersections of canvas (steps 1 through 4).

Next, cross each point of the large cross stitch with one half-cross stitch (steps 5 through 12).

Repeat to fill the area.

Note that the Long Rice Stitch when worked in tapestry wool produces a well-defined stitch, while the Standard Rice Stitch is much more compact. Because of this, it's best to work the Standard Rice stitch in narrower threads such as pearl cotton, as it's not really suitable for tapestry wool.
