The stitch can be worked individually, or in rows. To work a single stitch, bring the needle up through the canvas, across three intersections and then insert the needle into the canvas (1-2).
Bring your needle up through the canvas again, skipping one hole between your original entry point and the current entry point, and then down again (3-4).
The stitch can also be worked in rows, working from left to right: make all of the 1-2 stitches across the row, followed by your 3-4 stitches coming back from right-to-left.
