Decorative trims are a lovely addition to any needlepoint project, and should be stitched in place after the project has been blocked and finished.

Needlepoint looks spectacular adorned with upholstery and home decor trims such as poms, fringe and lace. Wide, decorative piping adds a rich look to classically-inspired patterns.

Beads and buttons add charm to florals and juvenile designs, and an occasional charm - for example a small golden bee on a flower - adds and unexpected twist.

Decorative trims should be hand-sewn to the needlepoint using all-purpose sewing thread and should be as unnoticable as possible. You can also use fabric glue, but use caution as the glue can be very visible if you use too much of it to secure your trim, and it cannot be removed.
