Inspiration from Unusual Sources

From Cheryl Fall, About.com GuideJune 1, 2009

I like to spend several hours per day designing material for needlepoint. I usually have some thought that’s been floating in my head all day – a mental image of an idea for a design.

On some days, inspiration seems nearly non-existent, and I have to dig deep to find sources of inspiration. A quick look around me, a walk to the park, or browsing through old cards and ephemera usually does the trick.

Today, however, my inspiration comes from an unusual source – striped drapes. It wasn’t the ugly stripes that were the inspiration, but the over-the-top color combination. The drapes featured gorgeous shades of red, gold and a cantaloupe-orange color, with accents of blue and green. This odd yet striking combination of colors inspired the Salamanca needlepoint chart I created for you.

Enjoy the design, and remember that sometimes inspiration comes from the most unusual sources.

What has been your oddest form of inspiration for needlepoint designs? Tell us about it by filling out the Needlepoint Submission Form or send us a photo of your project. We’d love to see hear from you!
